The Legacy Of Captain John Smith s Life Essay - 1278 Words
While it is impossible to truly elaborate or even go into much detail on the exploits of Captain John Smithââ¬â¢s life, in this paper I will be covering several of his many achievements. In addition, I will be dispelling several of the popular myths in regards to his life that many modern day Americans believe in. Some of these more modern day myths or false narratives are due to his story being adapted and changed in order to make a childrenââ¬â¢s video by Disney, while others have been debated by historians ever since they were penned by Smith in one of his most famous works consisting of six volumes: The Generall Historie of Virginia, New-England, and the Summer Isles. While many cannot picture Smith in any context other than with Pocahontas, he had a very active life before he even met her. As stated by Woolf, prior to even meeting Pocahontas Smith had been ââ¬Å"in an army fighting the Ottoman Turks in central Europe, during which he went through several escapes, was seriously wounded, taken into slavery, after which he murdered his slave-master and escaped, along with being shipwrecked twice.â⬠1 All of these exploits happened before Smith ended up in Virginia at the Jamestown colony, and met Pocahontas, the narrative of which most Americans are intimately familiar with or so they think. Stefan pul ed out the scrap of paper covered in Mrs. Flowersââ¬â¢s tangled handwriting and squinted at it. Vampire vision or not, deciphering Mrs. Flowersââ¬â¢s writing could be a chal enge. Oh, Stefan. He was earnest, and sweet, and noble. His poetââ¬â¢s soul shone through those gorgeous green eyes. She couldnââ¬â¢t regret loving Stefan. But sometimes she secretly wished that she had found Stefan in a less complicated form, that the soul and the intel igence, the love and the passion, the sophistication and the gentleness had somehow been possible in the form of a real eighteenyear-old boy; that he had been what he had pretended to be when she first met him: mysterious, foreign, but human. ââ¬Å"Do you have anything made of hematite?â⬠he asked now. ââ¬Å"Jewelry, or maybe knickknacks? And incense withâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ He frowned at the paper. ââ¬Å"Althea in it? Dark, cool tendrils of fog were drifting around her, yet the rest of the street was just as sunny as it had been a few minutes before. Elenaââ¬â¢s heart began to pound hard before her brain even caught up and realized what was happening. Run! something inside her howled, but it was too late. Her limbs were suddenly heavy as lead. The voice spoke again, whispering in her ear, gloating. ââ¬Å"They never saw you, those boys. Girls like Marissa, like Meredith, can find love and be happy. Only the monsters bother to find the real Elena. Poor, poor Elena, youââ¬â¢l never be normal, wil you? Not like other girls.â⬠It laughed softly, viciously. The fog pressed thicker around her. Now Elena couldnââ¬â¢t see the rest of the street, or anything beyond the darkness. She tried to get to her feet, to move forward a few steps, to shake off the fog. But she couldnââ¬â¢t move. The fog was like a heavy blanket holding her down, but she couldnââ¬â¢t touch it, couldnââ¬â¢t fight it. Elena panicked, tried once more to surge to her feet, opened her mouth to cal , Stefan! But the fog swirled into her, through her, soaking into her every pore. Unable to fight back or cal out, she col apsed. It was stil freezing cold. ââ¬Å"At least I have clothes on this time,â⬠Damon muttered, kicking at a piece of charred wood as he trudged across the barren surface of the Dark Moon. The place was beginning to get to him, he had to admit. He had been wandering this desolate landscape for what felt like days, although the unchanging darkness here made it impossible for him to know for sure how much time had passed. When he had awakened, Damon had assumed he would find the little redbird next to him, eager for his company and protection. But heââ¬â¢d awoken alone, lying on the ground. No phantom, no grateful girl. He frowned and poked one tentative foot into a heap of ash that might conceal a body, but was unsurprised to find nothing but mud beneath the ash, smearing more filth onto his once-polished black boots. After heââ¬â¢d arrived here and started searching for Bonnie, heââ¬â¢d expected that at any moment, he might stumble across her unconscious body. Heââ¬â¢d had a powerful image of what she would look like, pale and silent in the darkness, long red curls caked with ash. But now he was becoming convinced that, wherever the phantom had taken Bonnie, she wasnââ¬â¢t here. Heââ¬â¢d come here to be a hero: defeat the phantom, save the girl, and ultimately save his girl. What an idiot, he thought, curling his lip at his own foolishness. The phantom hadnââ¬â¢t brought him to wherever it was keeping Bonnie. Alone on this ash heap of the moon, he felt oddly rejected. Didnââ¬â¢t it want him? A sudden powerful wind pushed against him, and Damon staggered backward a few steps before regaining his balance. The wind brought a sound with it: Was that a moan? He altered his course, hunching his shoulders and heading for where he thought the sound had come from. Then the sound came again, a sad, sobbing moan echoing behind him. He turned back, but his footsteps were closer together and less confident than usual. What if he was wrong and the little witch was hurt and alone somewhere on this godforsaken moon? He was terribly hungry. He pushed his tongue against his aching canines, and they grew knife-sharp. His mouth was so dry; he imagined the flow of sweet, rich blood, life itself pulsing against his lips. The moaning came once more, from his left this time, and again he swerved toward it. The wind blew against his face, cold and wet with mist. This was al Elenaââ¬â¢s fault. He was a monster. He was supposed to be a monster, to take blood unflinchingly, to kil without a second thought or care. But Elena had changed al that. She had made him want to protect her. Then he had started looking out for her friends, and final y even saving her provincial little town, when any self-respecting vampire would have either been long gone when the kitsune came, or enjoyed the devastation with warm blood on his lips. Heââ¬â¢d done al that ââ¬â heââ¬â¢d changed for her ââ¬â and she stil didnââ¬â¢t love him. Not enough, anyway. When heââ¬â¢d kissed her throat and stroked her hair the other night, who had she been thinking of? That weakling Stefan. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s always Stefan, isnââ¬â¢t it?â⬠a clear, cool voice said behind him. Damon froze, the hairs on the back of his neck rising. ââ¬Å"Whatever you tried to take from him,â⬠the voice continued, ââ¬Å"you were just fighting to even the scales, because the fact is that he got everything, and you had nothing at al . You just wanted things to be fair.â⬠Damon shuddered, not turning around. No one had ever understood that. He just wanted things to be fair. ââ¬Å"Your father cared for him much more than he did for you. Youââ¬â¢ve always known that,â⬠the voice went on. ââ¬Å"You were the oldest, the heir, but Stefan was the one your father loved. And, in romance, you have always been two steps behind Stefan. Katherine already loved him by the time you met her; then the same sad story happened al over again with Elena. They say they love you, these girls of yours, but they have never loved you best, or most, or only, not even when you give them your whole heart.â⬠Damon shuddered again. He felt a tear run down his cheek and, infuriated, wiped it away. ââ¬Å"And you know why that is, donââ¬â¢t you, Damon?â⬠the creature went on smoothly. ââ¬Å"Stefan. Stefanââ¬â¢s always taken everything youââ¬â¢ve ever wanted. Heââ¬â¢s gotten the things you wanted before you even saw them, and left nothing for you. Elena doesnââ¬â¢t love you. She never has and she never wil .â⬠Something broke inside Damon at the creatureââ¬â¢s words, and instantly he snapped back to himself. How dare the phantom make him question Elenaââ¬â¢s love? It was the only true thing he knew. A cold breeze fluttered Damonââ¬â¢s clothing. He couldnââ¬â¢t hear the moaning now. And then everything went stil . ââ¬Å"I know what youââ¬â¢re doing,â⬠Damon snarled. ââ¬Å"You think you can trick me? Do you suppose you can turn me against Elena?â⬠A soft, wet footstep in the mud sounded behind him. ââ¬Å"Oh, little vampire,â⬠the voice said mockingly. ââ¬Å"Oh, little phantom,â⬠Damon said back, matching the creatureââ¬â¢s tone. ââ¬Å"You have no idea the mistake you just made.â⬠Steeling himself to leap, he whirled around, fangs ful y extended. But before he could pounce, cold strong hands seized him by the throat and pul ed him into the air. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢d also recommend burying pieces of iron around whatever youââ¬â¢re trying to protect,â⬠the shopkeeper suggested. ââ¬Å"Horseshoes are traditional, but anything made of iron, especial y anything round or curved, wil do.â⬠Sheââ¬â¢d passed through various stages of disbelief as Stefan had tried to buy up what seemed like every single object, herb, or charm related to protection in the shop, and now had become manical y helpful. ââ¬Å"I think Iââ¬â¢ve got everything I need for now,â⬠Stefan said politely. ââ¬Å"Thank you so much for your help.â⬠Her dimples shone as she rang up his purchases on the shopââ¬â¢s old-fashioned metal cash register, and he smiled back. He thought he had managed to decipher every item on Mrs. Flowersââ¬â¢s list correctly, and was feeling fairly proud of himself. Someone opened the door to come in, and a cold breeze whooshed into the shop, setting the magical items and wal hangings flapping. ââ¬Å"Do you feel that?â⬠the shopkeeper asked. ââ¬Å"I think a stormââ¬â¢s coming.â⬠Her hair, caught by the wind, fanned out in the air. Stefan, about to make a pleasant rejoinder, stared in horror. Her long locks, suspended for a moment, twisted their tendrils into one curling strand that spel ed out, clearly and chil ingly: matt But if the phantom had found a new target, that meant Elena ââ¬â Stefan whipped around, looking frantical y toward the front of the shop. Elena wasnââ¬â¢t there. ââ¬Å"Are you al right?â⬠the shopkeeper asked as Stefan stared wildly around. Ignoring her, he hurried back toward the door of the shop, looking down every aisle, in every nook. Stefan let his Power spread out, reaching for a trace of Elenaââ¬â¢s distinctive presence. Nothing. She wasnââ¬â¢t in the shop. How could he not have noticed her leaving? He pressed his fists into his eyes until little stars burst beneath his lids. This was his fault. He hadnââ¬â¢t been feeding on human blood, and his powers were sorely diminished. Why had he let himself get so weak? If he had been at ful strength, he would have realized immediately that she had gone. It was self-indulgent to give in to his conscience when he had people to protect. ââ¬Å"Are you al right?â⬠the woman asked again. Sheââ¬â¢d fol owed him down the aisles of the store, holding out his bag, and was looking at him anxiously. Stefan took hold of the bag. ââ¬Å"The girl I came in with,â⬠he said urgently. ââ¬Å"Did you see where she went?â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh,â⬠she replied, frowning. ââ¬Å"She went back outside when we were heading off to look through the incense section.â⬠That long ago. Even the shopkeeper had noticed Elena leaving. Stefan gave a jerky nod of thanks before striding out into the dazzling sunlight. He looked frantical y up and down Main Street. He felt a wave of relief when he spotted her sitting on a bench outside the drugstore a few doors down. But then he took note of her slumped posture, her beautiful blond head resting limply on one of her shoulders. Stefan was at her side in a flash, grateful to find her breathing shal ow yet steady, her pulse strong. But she was unconscious. ââ¬Å"Elena,â⬠he said, gently stroking her cheek. ââ¬Å"Elena, wake up. The snapping of branches was deafening, as if something huge was shoving its way through the bracken. Al around them, thorny rosebush branches whipped back and forth, although there was no wind. She yelped as one of the waving branches smacked her across the arm, gashing her skin open. Bonnie let out a wail, and Elenaââ¬â¢s heart beat double time in her chest. She whirled around, pushing Bonnie behind her. She bal ed her hands into fists and crouched, trying to remember what Meredith had taught her about fighting an attacker. But as she looked around, al she could see for miles were roses. Black, perfect roses. Bonnie gave a smal whimper and pressed closer to Elenaââ¬â¢s back. The Strengths And Weaknesses Of Joint Warfare The Strengths and Weaknesses of Joint Warfare Armed with numerous studies, and intensive public hearings, Congress mandated far-reaching changes in DOD organization and responsibilities in the Goldwater-Nichols Department of Defense Reorganization Act of 1986. This landmark legislation significantly expanded the authority and responsibility of the chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff. Included in this expanded authority and responsibility was the requirement for the chairman to develop a doctrine for the joint employment of armed forces. As operations Urgent Fury, Just Cause, and Desert Storm have vividly demonstrated, the realities of armed conflict in today's world make the integration of individual service capabilities a matter of success or failure, life or death. Furthermore, the operation Desert One demonstrated the need for a strengthened Joint Warfare Doctrine and the consequent change in Joint Warfare Employment. It is plain to see the benefits of having the greatest navy integrated with the worlds greatest army and air forc e. However, even in the wake of a relatively successful joint operation in the Middle East (Desert Storm), certain weaknesses are evident in the current joint employment tactics and/or capabilities. By analyzing past operations such as Urgent Fury and Desert Storm, we are able to see sufficient evidence that the Joint Warfare Concept can be disastrous in one instance and virtually flawless in another. Perhaps the biggest strength of Joint Warfare is how it appears on paper. It would be difficult to find someone to debate against combining the forces to achieve total dominance. A defined chain of command with equal representation from all the armed services coupled with standardized clear communication and training throughout the branches, results in an elite fighting force with endless capabilities. Efficiency is the major goal behind Joint Warfare and so long as the clear channels of communication throughout the services hold true, this goal is attainable. This efficiency, though almost impossible to fully achieve, was seen during Desert Storm. During the Desert Storm campaign, General Schwarztkopf was Commander and Chief of US Central Command (USCINCCENT). His first order of business was to name component commanders. All four services were represented and all four wore three stars (Lieutenant Generals and a Vice Admiral, respectively) so that one service didnt have to fight thro ugh ranks to be heard and/or taken seriously. Because of the Goldwater-Nichols Act, unified and specified commanders possessed the full range of authority needed to meet their responsibilities and consequently gained collective strength utilizing unity of command. The fact that the clear channels of communication remained open and that one theater commander (Gen. Schwartzkopf) retained confidence from the President, Secretary of Defense, and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Schwartzkopf was allowed to conduct the operation with a smoothness not seen in recent conflicts. Conversely, the idea of Joint Warfare has its weaknesses. Although Joint Warfare seems almost perfect on paper, its realistically imperfect. Take for example, the Desert One operation to free the hostages in Iran. On paper, it looked like everything should come together despite the various forces not training together and not 100% familiar with the equipment they were to use during the mission. It seemed logical to high-ranking officials in Washington D.C. that Navy pilots should be able to fly over land and that marine pilots (which ultimately replaced most of the Navy pilots) could fly the Navy version of the H-53 without any difficulty, regardless of the mission. Unfortunately for those involved, the logic hammered-out by the high-ranking officials in the Pentagon proved to be wrong. The problem of one branch of service taking direct orders from a person in another will persist through future conflicts. How can a General in the Army make a decision for Navy personnel? In turn, how can an Admiral make a decision about a mission conducted my Army rangers? Even though the component commanders in an operation are of equal rank, its only natural for those commanders to argue for and possibly favor their respective branch. Also, with the Navy having a small air component compared to the Air Force in large-scale operations, it seems that the Air Force component commander will command overall air operations. CLEP, the College-Level Examination Program, are tests given by the College Board to grant credit for college courses without taking on a full semester of classes. Students that study abroad, those that have gained job experience, and those that have gained knowledge through independent study, benefit from taking the CLEP exams. Using the CLEP exams to show your proficiency in undergraduate work is a way to get past all of that. Taking the exams also: Can elevate the degree that you already have: You may have been in the work force for many years and now your job has come into the tech world. Studying courses related to computers may be something that you now need to keep in line with technology. You employer may even offer incentives for you to take the CLEP courses that are available. Keep you from taking remedial courses: Students taking entrance exams for college often find that they need to take remedial courses for Math and English before moving into their regular college courses Taking the CLEP exams, they may not have to take the remedial classes to get into upper level classes that they already know are prepared for. Push you into the higher-level classes faster: You get to skip over many of the lower level classes and gain the credit needed to receive Certificate Program Degrees offered at many institutions today. Give you an idea of where you are in a field of study: Taking the CLEP exams can also prepare you for going into college without a blind eye as to what you know already. With tests for Algebra, Biology, Chemistry, and languages such as Spanish, if you already have been practicing these subjects, take the CLEP exams. If you have been out of school for some time, studying and practicing for these exams usually brings it all back. Save money (this one should have been number 1) The average college course runs about 250.00, for a semester of 5 classes that could run a studentââ¬â¢s bill up to over $7,000 for the year. With time preparing for the CLEP exams and taking the same number of classes you would only spend $400-500 for the same credit courses. Thatââ¬â¢s a savings of up to 80%. Military Benefit: Although there is a fee, at some centers up to $80.00, there are circumstances that this fee is waived. This can change from testing center to testing center so it is best to get in touch with your advisor to get firm information about the centers in your area. They will be better suited to tell you what to look forward to. Those who have served in the military may be eligible to take free CLEP exams. Military personnel are also waived fees, but how often they can take it free of charge has changed in recent years. The Office of Veteranââ¬â¢s Affairs in your area will give you full information on benefits that are available. Those in the military report that they pay for the test, and then are reimbursed for the price of the test and center fees. Administrative Help To determine further if the CLEP exams are a good fit for you, make an appointment with your advisors. Go over where you are now education wise, and what taking the exams will do for your advancement, and then decide. Many Community Colleges now have what is called dual-admissions programs. These programs are in place to help those that are in 2-year programs can transfer their credits seamlessly into a 4-year University and when they transfer in, they are Juniors instead of Sophomores. Utilizing the CLEP exams gives students the same options. Before taking any of the exams, meet with your advisors and the school advisors of the University you have in mind to see what courses are transferrable. Preparation You may be anxious, like most people, when faced with exams, and like many other tests, the CLEP exams can be intimidating. You may feel like you know the work and then take the test and a month later get the news that you have failed. Like any other exam that you take, you must study for the CLEP exams. They are scored on the college level and credit is only given when you pass. If you care about your future, you will prepare for these tests and not take them lightly. These test scores may be the link to your getting that perfect job, or being accepted in an institution of higher learning. Consider study guides to help you prepare for the CLEP tests. There are countless online sources to help you. The college board website offers practice tests for you to get an idea of what the exams are like under each subject. They also have low cost study guides to help you prepare for the exams. The Format If you like the idea of multiple-choice testing, then the CLEP is one of those types of tests. The CLEP exams usually last about 90 minutes and are all done on computer with a multiple-choice platform, except for the written essays which are a mandatory part of the English Composition with Essay exams. Students that have prepared for the CLEP exams have reported that the one area that they needed extensive study time was the English Composition with essay tests, and essay preparation. There are study guides that will help you with preparation for English Composition exams and modular, and it is suggested that you practice writing essays before taking this CLEP test. Many students have trouble with writing, you are not alone. There are custom writing sites online that can help you with study guides and will critique your writing style to help you study for the CLEP writing exams. Important: Take getting help with the English Composition with Essay exam seriously because it is a 45-minute essay question, followed by a 45-minute multiple choice section. Once you pay for the exam, if you fail you must wait 6-months to retake it. It is best to get help if you know you need it before you take the tests. You are to take two mandatory essay tests with the College Composition exam that is graded by selected professors around the country, and then the grades are combined with your multiple-choice scores. There is also a College Composition Modular exam that is graded by your receiving college only with one essay and multiple-choice questions. Discuss with your advisors which of these you should take because colleges vary on which one they will accept. Locations The CLEP exams are offered in the United States and International colleges that accept CLEP credit. Your scores will be sent to be reviewed by the schools of your choice. Not all schools accept all tests. Check before you designate your tests to be released. Alternatives Keep in mind that CLEP tests are lower-level classes for regional schools, however, there are tests such as the DSSTââ¬â¢S (Danteââ¬â¢s Subject Standardized Tests) that are available for lower and upper level classes. These tests are taken primarily by non-traditional students but are open to all. MOOCs are also an inexpensive alternative to a full course of study. Massive Open Online Courses are free online courses popping up all over the internet. You can find MOOCs at some of the most prestigious schools, like Yale, Howard, Stanford and MIT. The only thing that is not offered by taking MOOCs is the credit for the courses, but they can be used to study and prep for the CLEP tests. With the cost of a college education soaring it is good to know that there are ways that everyone that wants to can get a quality education. Today, a high school diploma is not enough to get a well-paying job. This is not to say that all people that attend college land that perfect job, but when you have the coursework to back you up on your resume you will be a step ahead of the competition for the job you are after. The children is not taken into consideration to a great extent as they are kept in the dark of the whyââ¬â¢s, howââ¬â¢s, and whatââ¬â¢s of it. They are punished if they violate the rules, as discipline is not possible, without teaching. However, this is only an aspect of control, as empirical research brings out multiple layers of meaning to the word ââ¬Ëcontrolââ¬â¢. For example, Grolnick (2005) being in control and controlling the behavior of a child can be different. To be in control of childââ¬â¢s behavior is to protect them from dangers and equally assure civil behavior. This might at times be restrictive and sometimes allowing autonomy, but under supervision. As a technical term, ââ¬Ëcontrolââ¬â¢ is more narrow and precise. It interferes with the human need to feel autonomous and competent.
