The Roaring Twenties In the 1920’s, America was evolving into a fun, carefree, and entertaining country – or so many people thought. On the outside, many people observed Americans with prosperity, lavish lives, and new opportunities through new technology and inventions. However, although America seemed to be well off at the time and enjoying life, it was only a slight cover up. Inside the country, there was turmoil which included debt and war. For this reason, America earned the reputation of the 1920’s as the Roaring Twenties due to the positive outcomes of the economic conditions, developments in the arts, and developments in entertainment. Many people met in clubs to dance to the new popular music. Motion pictures were also perfected and people could now see mov ies with sound such as â€Å"The Jazz Singer† in 1927. Sporting events also became popular in the 1920s. Stadiums were crowded to see baseball stars such as Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Arenas also filled for fighting events and boxers such as Jack Dempsey, a heavyweight champion. As one can see, the American began spoiling himself and indulged in entertainment. The arts in the 1920s helped earn the Roaring Twenties its name because it began a revolution. The Harlem Renaissance made black poets, singers, and musicians very popular. With the radio now being used, it was easier to promote their talents countrywide. Through the writings of African Americans such as Langston Hughes, the white American discovered the nation according to the black man. African Americans also made Jazz music very popular. With the easygoing and smooth listening feel, Americans began to dance to the music of Jazz musicians such as Handy â€Å"Jelly Roll† Morton and Joe â€Å"King† Oliver.
